How We Do School at Willow

At Willow Public School Personalized Learning puts students in charge of their own learning and empowers instructors to customize instruction to meet students’ individual needs and interests. At Willow, we provide student hope without bounds, and a pathway to success in college, career, and life.

Classes at Willow are integrated. In “real life” we often face challenges that require us to solve problems using different subject areas at the same time. That is why we have Humanities block (Social Studies and Language Arts), and Inquiry block (Math and Science). Projects require students to draw from different subject areas and to work collaboratively with teachers, experts, and other students. In addition, all students study the Spanish language.

The Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) is created by students and their teachers and designed so students can progress at their own pace. The online learning platform (See the videos for more information) allows students and teachers to follow the learning plans, and track progress toward meeting academic and other goals.

During Personalized Learning Time (Learning Lab), students use the learning platform to work at their own pace on academic content, literacy skills, and the habits and skills necessary for their later success in college, career, and life. The content is built around Common Core standards and is aligned with the Humanities and Inquiry blocks. The teacher has several roles during PLT: coaching students in developing self-directed learning habits, facilitating goal setting and reflection and providing academic content and subject matter support.

Through our partnership with Walla Walla Community College, students work on what it takes to be successful in college, career, and life. Tutors from the college work with our students to help them improve their academic and study skills. In addition, Willow students get the opportunity to participate in programs on the WWCC campus.
